I wanted to visit Reykholt to shoot some winter photographs, especially of Snorralaug (Snorri's bath). The bath is fed by water from hot and cold springs nearby, so the temperature can be adjusted to suit. Snorri spent a lot of time in the bath. The door leads to an underground passageway, which in Snorri's time, led back to his house on the hill behind the bath. I also wanted to visit friends in Reykholt. On the day I happened to visit, I could barely get inside. The public buildings were filled with Icelandic schoolchildren receiving instruction for their confirmation. Regardless, my conversations with some of the scholars there were extremely helpful. They opened up some of my thinking about topics I discuss in my book, and in so doing, they helped make the book better. |
