Our first stop in Dýrafjörður was Haukadalur, the valley where much of Gísla saga takes place. I very much wanted to take photos of the valley in winter, and I was especially interested in seeing Seftjörn, the pond next to the fjord where, according to the saga, people from the district played knattleikr, the Viking ball game, during the winter. It would have been hard to play on the day I visited; deep snow covered the pond.

The photo shows a summer house in the outer reaches of the valley, alone and snowbound.
