Many of the mountains in Iceland, including Ingólfsfjall, are table mountains, formed when a volcano erupts under a glacier, resulting in a mountain with steep sides and a flat summit. The first settler in Iceland, Ingólfr Arnarson, stayed one winter near Ingólfsfjall before he made his permanent settlement in what is now the city center of Reykjavík. Ingólfr is said to be buried in the mountain. |
