The Ţjóđveldisbćr farm house is a recreation of a late Viking age farmhouse at Stöng in the nearby Ţjórsárdalur valley. The Stöng farmhouse was a large, prosperous farm when it was covered by volcanic ash in 1104 during an eruption by Hekla. The ash preserved the farmhouse, and so the archaeological investigation of Stöng remains one of the best sources of information about Icelandic farm houses of the Viking era. I visited in order to photograph the house in winter. In this long shot, the house is centered on top of the hill. The small building to the right is a church. None of the other outbuildings from the original Stöng farm, such as the smithy and animal barns, have been reconstructed. |
