The flight to Iceland from North America is a short, overnight flight, arriving in Iceland early in the morning. I find it difficult to sleep on board an airplane, so I'm usually tired when I arrive in Iceland. Not this time. I had slept on the plane and was ready to begin my travels.

One of my goals this visit was to shoot some winter photographs of Þingvellir, the site of Iceland's national parliament beginning in the year 930. I drove out of the airport at Keflavík, skirted Reykjavík, and arrived at Þingvellir just as the early sun was starting to paint surrounding mountains. The photo shows the Öxará river in the highlands above Þingvellir. Downstream, the river drops into Þingvellir and flows through the valley.
