In Viking age Iceland, Borg was the farm of Egill Skallagrķmsson, a poet and a Viking whose story is told in Egils saga. Behind the farm is the "borg", the stony outcrop that gives the farm its name. I've made the short walk to the top of the outcrop many times to admire the view. In saga days, it would have been possible to spot visitors coming from a long way away, whether overland or up the fjord. With all the development taking place in the fast growing town of Borgarnes, it's harder and harder to see the fjord. During this visit, I continued my walk over the outcrop and down the other side, to Borgarlękur, the small creek the flows past the farm. The color of the rocks suggests there's a lot of iron in the water. The rock outcrop that gives Borg its name is visible in the rear to the right. |
