When Iceland was first being settled over one thousand years ago, Önundr tré-fótr (wooden-leg) took land in this valley, below the mountain called Kaldbakr (cold back). He didn't much care for the place, in comparison to the land he left behind in Norway. He spoke a verse:

I have left behind many kinsmen
and lands to reach this pass;
I have struck a hard bargain, swapped
my fields for the cold-backed mountain.

When he died, Önundr was buried in the valley beyond the lake.

The verse is from Grettis saga, Bernard Scudder, trans. The Complete Sagas of Icelanders. (Reykjavík: Leifr Eiríksson Publishing, 1997.) Vol.2, p.58.
