Lakagígar is a volcanic area associated with the volcano Laki, where a massive eruption occurred in 1783 creating an enormous lava field. Here, the volcanic debris on one side of the gully is covered with moss, while the other side is desolate, presumably because one side has moisture while the other doesn't. Why is anyone's guess.
