The lake Hítarvatn is in the innermost part of the Hítardalur valley.

Björn lived at the farm Hölmur on the shore of Hítarvatn, as told in Bjarnar saga Hítdælakappa. Björn was killed in the hills above the lake by Þórður, his rival for the affections of Oddný.
