Rauðakúla is a low volcanic crater alongside the road to Hítarvatn, a small lake in the Hítardalur valley.

It was on the shores of Hvítavatn that the saga hero Björn kept his home, and where he was killed by Þórður, his rival for the affections of Oddný.
